To All Charlotte Chess Club Members:

As you are aware, the North Carolina Open will take place this weekend here in Charlotte and though I have never been cited for, nor convicted of violating any USCF nor NCCA rule, for personal reasons, NCCA President Gary Newsom, with the aid of his "legal adviser," is illegally denying my right to participate? In doing so, he is ignoring the command of USCF Executive Director Bill Hall that I be allowed to play. Furthermore, according to the USCF Code of Ethics,
P. 235, h. "Attempting to interfere with the rights of any USCF member, such as by barring someone from entering a USCF-sanctioned event for personal reasons" is a serious violation of the Code of Ethics. Unfortunately, the USCF wheels of justice are very slow.

Regardless, I encourage everyone to participate this weekend! In fact, this year's event is much improved and includes a number of the many recommendations which I have insisted upon for years, ie. the idea that our state championship should be organized and directed by NCCA people instead of an out-of-state organizer who only payed back 60%; a substantially reduced entry fee; reduced Hotel room fee, the prize fund increased and guaranteed by the NCCA, more directors available, and most importantly, the event should be "closed" to North Carolina players only. Unfortunately, that important recommendation continues to be ignored? It makes no sense to increase and guarantee the prize fund and then allow out-ot-state or out-of-country Grandmasters to take the money back to Russia, instead of dividing it among our own North Carolina players who deserve it?! Worse, the "Top NC player" may end up with only 3 points!? For next year, vote for "closed!"

On Sunday morning at 9:30am, the annual NCCA meeting will take place whereby new officers will be voted in. It is my understanding that Tom Hales of Asheboro may toss his hat into the ring! Tom has proven himself to be an independent thinker and a visionary who is seriously concerned about the future of chess in North Carolina. And, he continues to be one of NC's most successful promoters with Asheboro Open #61 coming up soon! Tom is a fair and honest man who follows the rules. Regardless of the position for which he is nominated, I strongly encourage everyone to vote for Tom Hales. He's a good guy!

In the mean time, I ask all of you to join us at the Charlotte Chess Club at Skyland this Wednesday evening for great food, friendly conversation and one rated game of chess at 7:45pm. Be there, or be square!

Good luck to everyone this weekend,

NM Leland Fuerstman
