Leland,

Re: Game 0753. You say at the end that Rb7 probably couldn't be defended.  Actually, it's quite easy to defend (perhaps not very easy to win, but simple defense gets Black at least a draw).

40...Re6!

If White takes the rook, then the King Re-captures, and stays in reach of his own pawns (i.e. If 42.Rb6+, then 42...Kf7).  The Rook behind the a-pawn combined with his own passed d-pawn to distract White makes it an easy draw.

The only other option is not to take on e6, but then what?  White can't make progress.  Black's pawns never move, the a-rook toggles behind the a-pawn, and if the specific line 41.Ra7 Ra1 42.Ra8 (intending a7 and Rf8+), then Rd6 (since there is no mate from the 8th rank, if 43.Rf8+ Kg7 44.Rg8+ Kf6 etc.).  The White pawn is just far enough back that he can't force the promotion.

I actually predicted that as being the only response during the game. What I meant was, "if Black doesn't play 40...Re6! immediately condeeding the Draw, he is probably losing." Your analysis is accurate.
