CCC NEWS &VIEWS 1-16-03
By NM Leland Fuerstman
Wendy's XLII Begins
Charlotte, NC  1-15-03:  A rather healthy crowd of 34 of the Metrolina area's most courageous competitors journied to this temple of higher thinkers more commonly known as Wendy's in order to stimulate their medial frontal gyros as they participated in Rd:1 of Wendy's XLIIIn the Top Section, the CCC's highest rated active player, current NC State Champion, NM Frankie "Blitz" Newton(1-0) (2257) methodically restricted the position of Patrick "Flanker" McCartney(0-1) (2033) ultimately forcing resignation while NM John "NightTrain" Lane(1-0) (2080) took Chris "the Babe" Mabe(0-1) (1909) to school. In addition, with the Black pieces, NM Leland "El-Duce" Fuerstman(1-0) (2033) broke out the kryptonite against Clarke "Kent" Brosi(0-1) while NM Harold "Wyn" Mouzon(.5-.5) (2215) split the point with NM Daniel "Schlecter" Liu(.5-.5) (2000). In the Cruiserweight Division, Deneil "Sean" Brazell(1-0) (1781) out muscled Jerome "Cookie Monster" DeBell(0-1) (1660). In the Middle Section, Jonathan "the Enforcer" Munnell(1-0) (1460) upset Daryl "Flash" Gordon(0-1) (1709), Doug "Sky" Millsaps(1-0) (1637) handled Viktor "the Mad Ukrainian" Ozherelyev(0-1) (1600), the good Reverend Bernard "Dusty" Baker(1-0) (1588) dusted Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton(0-1) (1459) and #6 in the nation 7 year old phenom Joshua "Moo" Mu(1-0) (1320) who happens to be the most diminutive member of the CCC bested Winfred "Guns" Gatlin(0-1) (1429) who... Also, in the Middle Section, Mark "Chessman" Johnson(.5-.5) (1491) split the point with "CEO" Mike Isner(.5-.5) (1566) while Danesh Dadgar(.5-.5) (1587) did likewise with Frank "Moo" Mu(.5-.5) (1641). In the Lower Section, victories were posted by Mike Richards, Travis Filling, Brandy Johnson, Ankit "Butch" Jivan and Michael Savage. Jurjevich, Mabe Share Top Honors; Eberhardinger Perfect in Lower Section of Smokehouse XXXIV
Charlotte, NC 12-21-02: A rather moderate  turnout of 18 indefatigable chessplayers participated in Smokehouse XXXIV. In the Top Section, which was noticably absent of most of Charlotte's top players, (some speculated that the fear of losing was the reason), NM Joseph Jurjevich (2154) shared the point with Kenneth J. Baxter (1900) in Rd:1 before logging in victories versus Deneil "Sean" Brazell (1746) and Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (2114) while Chris "the Babe" Mabe (1886) drew Expert Tapia (2114) in Rd:1 then defeated Robert C. Moore (1700) and Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1853) to share =1st-2nd with a score of 2.5-.5 and take home $75. The Lower Section was dominated by "Iron" Mike Eberhardinger (1600) who reeled off wins versus James MacDougall (1696), Mark "Chessman" Johnson (1486) and the good Reverend Bernard "JoeDon" Baker (1575) to score a perfect 3-0 and take home $80. Honorable mention goes to Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1853) who upset NM Fuerstman (2064) and Expert Keith Eubanks (1997) in Rds: 1 & 2.
