Wendy's LX Begins; CCC Top 3 Missing?!
Charlotte, NC 10-6-04:  A normal turnout of 32 anything but normal chessplayers converged upon this monument to super intellectuals more commonly known as Wendy's in order to participate in Rd:1 of Wendy's LX. In the Top Section, (half point byes were granted to our top 3 players whom, for various reasons, were unable to attend), Expert Chris "the Babe" Mabe (2110) drove in the winning run in the late innings against Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1964), Michael "Jordan" Kliber (1900) literally clobbered S.C. Expert Keith "Chuck" Eubanks (2062), NM Leland "Premier Hombre" Fuerstman (2047) successfully employed Korchnoi's "anti-Benko" move 4 b3! versus the good Reverend Bernard "King" Baker (1862) and "...look, up in the sky, it's a bird, it's a plane, it's" Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1827) who brought "truth and justice the American way" to Michael "the Savage" Savage (1791) each with 1-0. In the "B" Section, Chris "Dirty Harry" Callahan (1687) out tacticalized Paul "the Survivalist" Lucas (1625), Ankit "Butch" Jivan (1675) beat down Robert C. "Roger" Moore (1700) and "Iron" Mike Eberhardinger (1693) made peace with Ken "the Terrible" Ivens (1710). In the "C" Section, Kert "the Oracle" Edward (1565) did the cymbals thing to Jim "Sticks" Ulaky (1521), Kaled "the Alphabet" Abdelkefi (1516) outgunned Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1475), "Dr." Phil Whittington (1365) administered some bitter tasting medicine to Dave "Ameen" Eadie (1507) and student Ilgin "the Mad Turk" Birsan (1197) upset teacher Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1571)!("This only proves that Spencer is an excellent instructor!!") In the Lower Section, wins were submitted by: Ervon "Wooden" Nichols,Samuel "Reshevsky" Xin, Joe Shirlen, Hassan "HH" Hashemloo and returnee to competition Duncan "Doughnuts"  McLaughlin. All results may be observed on the "Current Crosstable."Next Smokehouse Saturday, October 16. Editor Needs Games; Please E-mail to: lelandfue@yahoo.com
Rangarajan, Tapia Share Top Honors in Green Market Championship *Quick Rated
Charlotte,  NC 9-11-04:  A cadre of 16 elite members of the CCC Honor Guard first paused for a moment of silence to remember our fellow Americans who lost their lives in the Twin Towers exactly 3 years ago, and then participated in the Green Market Championship. This one section open-air event, sponsored by Crown Communications, coincided with the Saturday Green Market with it's fresh vegetables, fruits, coffee, handy crafts, jewelry, etc. All players enjoyed "free" coffee,  bottled water, fresh baked muffins and giant cookies from Reid's Fine Foods! Save for a lively discussion with management about the DOGS in the playing area?!? (a City Ordinance prohibits animals from civic gatherings)this was a most enjoyable tournament for all. Sharing Top Honors with 3-0 were SM Karthik "Rajah" Rangarajan (Unr) who registered wins over "Dr." Phil Whittington (1470), Walter "Mitty" Overman (1473) and Chris "the Babe" Mabe (1858) and NM Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (1753) who defeated Joshua "Moo" Mu (1340), the good Reverend Bernard "King" Baker (1666) and NM Leland "Premier Hombre" Fuerstman (2078). Each pocketed $75. To view complete crosstable, "Click Here". (Fuerstman directed)
Fuerstman 3-0 in Top; C. Wheeless 3-0 in Lower Section of Smokehouse LV
Charlotte,  NC 9-18-04:  A congenial group of 19 of some of the Metrolina area's most talented chessplayers (who didn't fear putting it on the line), participated in Smokehouse LV. In the Top Section, NM Leland "Premier Hombre" Fuerstman (2000) who had been singing the "Smokehouse blues" after losing to "B" players in 3 of the past 4, posted victories over Randy "Wheels" Wheeless (1579) (0425), Shawn "Arlo" Pealer (2031) (0426)and Jackie "Bman" Ryan (1708) (0427)to capture clear 1st Place with 3-0 and pocket $100. Equal 2nd-4th were Shawn "Arlo" Pealer (2031), Jackie "Bman" Ryan (1708) and Ken "the Terrible" Ivens (1661) each with 2-1 winning $17. In the Lower Section, Colette "Wheels" Wheeless (1379) reeled off wins against Amanda Braband (565), Rob "Codes" Morse (1416) and Algie "Crumpler" Clyburn (1500) to score 3-0 and collect $80. Clear 2nd Place was Chang "Moon" Sun (1301) with 2.5-.5 winning $40. To view complete crosstable (Click Here)(Fuerstman directed) Next Smokehouse October 16. See ya' there!
