CCC NEWS &VIEWS 11-21-02
By NM Leland Fuerstman
McCartney Leads Top; Sztyber Middle; 3 in Lower Section of Wendy's XL
Charlotte, NC  11-20-02:  Thirty-four of the Charlotte area's most courageous competitors journied to this factory of creative thinkers more commonly known as Wendy's in order to participate in Rd:4 of Wendy's XLIn the Top Section, with time running out for each, Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1987) perpetrated his 3rd upset of the tournament with an energetic win over CCC Favorite Son, 16 year old phenom, Expert Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (2114) (See Game 0274) to lead with 3-1. Meanwhile, the CCC's #1 active player, NM Frankie "Blitz" Newton (2257) derailed NM John "Night-Train" Lane (2073) (See Game 0272), Jon "Cigars" Pietras (1782) used kryptonite on Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1852) and NM Leland "El-Presidente" Fuerstman (2062) split the point with David "Kamikaze" Jaap (1810) as did NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2000) versus Deneil "Sean"Brazell (1759). In the Middle Section, Frank "Chessman" Johnson (1471) struggled to survive, but the patient was ultimately pronounced dead as Dr. Gerard "the Butcher" Sztyber (1702) remains as the only perfect 4-0 in the tournament. In addition, veteran Robert "See" Moore (1700) got by Frank "Moo" Mu (1741), Slobodan "the Mad Serb" Sinanovic (1739) vanquished the good Reverend Bernard "Joe Don" Baker (1575), Viktor "the Mad Ukrainian" Ozherelyev (1585) upended Brandon "Starr" Brown (1504), Nathan "TechDude" Eerenberg (1553) played taps for Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1458) (See Game 0273) and Michael "You Know You Make Me Wanna" Shoup (1469) initiated Mike Fairchild (Unr). In the Lower Section, the winning streak of Hassan Hashemloo (1280) came to an abrupt conclusion as ringer Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1410) won a R&N vs. Rooks ending. (See Game 0275)  Other Lower Section winners were: Ankit "Butch" Jivan, CCC Player Representative Alphonse "Amazing Al" Ashamalla, Joe "Sticks Jr" Ulaky, Tony Hicks and Kevin Huang. Newton, Eubanks Share Top Honors; Ulaky Perfect in Lower Section of Smokehouse XXXIII
Charlotte, NC 11-23-02: A rather light turnout of 16 indefatigable chessplayers participated in Wendy's XXXIII. In the Top Section, which was noticably absent of most of Charlotte's top players, (some speculated that the fear of losing was the reason), 2002 NC State Champion NM Frankie "Blitz" Newton (2257) dispatched of Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1853) and Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1987) before agreeing to a quick GM draw with SC Expert Keith Eubanks (1997). Eubanks defeated Robert C Moore (1700) and survived a losing time scramble vs. NM Leland "El-moron" Fuerstman (2062) to share =1st-2nd with a score of 2.5-.5 and take home $75. The Lower Section was dominated by James "Sticks" Ulaky (1352) who knocked off Tony Hicks (956), Frank Johnson (1486) and Jonathan Munnell (1453) to score 3-0 and win $60. Equal 2nd with 2-1 was Jonathan Munnell winning $30. To view complete crosstable (clickHere) (Fuerstman directed) Next Smokehouse December 21. See ya' there!
