By NM Leland Fuerstman
"Superman" Defeats "Flash Gordon;" Newton 3-0 in Top; Baker 3-0 in Middle; J. Mu 3-0 in Lower Section of Wendy's XLII
Charlotte, NC  1-29-03:  A moderate turnout of 32 of the Metrolina area's most reckless mental jousters disregarded all other important matters and instead participated in Rd:3 of Wendy's XLII. In the Top Section, amid a certain amount of commotion, the CCC's #1 active player, current NC State Champion Frankie "Blitz" Newton (2246) survived a lively counter assault with NM John "NightTrain" Lane (2080) to lead with a perfect 3-0. Meanwhile, NM Leland "El-Duce" Fuerstman (2033) suffered a stunning upset at the hands of the pride of Bed-Sty, Deneil "Sean" Brazell (1794) as NM Daniel "Schlecter" Liu (2000) shared the point with Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (2033). In the Cruiserweight Division, mild mannered Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1846) revealed the large "S" on his chest against Daryl "Flash" Gordon (1715). In the Middle Section, the good Reverend Bernard "King" Baker (1588) upset Slobodan "the Mad Serb" Sinanovic (1721) to lead with 3-0. In addition, "CEO" Mike Isner (1566) discharged Chris "Dirty Harry" Callahan (1462), Brandon "Starr" Brown (1492) overturned the drum set of Jim "Sticks" Ulaky (1443), Michael "Twist &" Shoup (1445) wore a bullet proof vest versus Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1429) and David "Merv" Griffin (1694) shared the point with Frank "Moo" Mu (1641) as did Danesh Dadgar (1587) with Viktor "the Mad Ukrainian" Ozherelyev (1600). In the Lower Section, #6 in the Nation, 7 year old phenom, Joshua "Moo" Mu (1320) bested Mike Richards (1310) to lead with 3-0. Other Lower Section winners were: Michael Savage, Daryl "Wilkes" Booth, and David "Grizzly" Adams. Mera Perfect in Top; Johnson, Savage, Woods take Lower Section of  Smokehouse XXXV
Charlotte, NC 1-25-02: Two complete sections of a total of 20 chessplayers from 4 different continents participated in Smokehouse XXXV. In the Top Section, which was noticably absent of most of Charlotte's top players, (some speculated that the fear of losing was the reason), the pride of South America, (FM) Angel Mera (2161) posted victories against Robert C. Moore (1700), Chris "the Babe" Mabe (1909) and NM Leland "El-Duce" Fuerstman (2033) to score a perfect 3-0 and pocket $100. Clear 2nd Place with 2.5-.5 was Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1846) who took home $50. Equal 1st-3rd in the Lower Section were Mark "Chessman" Johnson (1491), Michael Savage (1360) and SSgt Russell Woods (1319) each scoring 2.5-.5 and winning $50.
