CCC NEWS & VIEWS 10-28-04
Mabe Leads Top; Eberhardinger "B"; Katz! "C"; Birsan, Xin Lower Section of Wendy's LX
'Sawox' Sweep 'Kods' in World Series !!
Charlotte, NC 10-27-04: Baseball continues to be America's favorite pastime as only 24 dyehard mental jousters congregated at this stadium especially designed for one on one competition more commonly known as Wendy's in order to participate (rather than spectate) in Rd:4 of Wendy's LVIn the Top Section, the "Curse of the Babe" seemed to have little effect on Expert Chris "the Babe" Mabe (2110) as he pitched a shut-out against the good Reverend Bernard "King" Baker (1862) to lead the series with 3-1. Meanwhile, the contest between the CCC's #1 & #2 players SM Karthik "Rajah" Rangarajan (2526) and NM Frankie "Neutron" Newton (2266) was a complicated encounter which went to the wire and resulted in Draw! (See Game 0435) In addition, NM Leland "Premier Hombre" Fuerstman (2047) yielded a half point after a 3 move repetition by Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1836) while Patrick "Fabio" McCartney (1964) survived a badly botched operation performed by Dr. Gerard "the Butcher" Sztyber (1769) (See Game 0436). In the "B" Section, "Iron" Mike Eberhardinger (1693) made his day against Chris "Dirty Harry" Callahan (1687) to lead with 3.5-.5. In addition, Slobodan "the Mad Serb" Sinanovic (1728) expatriated Viktor "the Mad Russian" Ozherelyev (1659) while Ankit "Butch" Jivan (1675) split the point with Laura "Karate Kid" Lee (1704). In the "C" Section, though he sat out to watch the "World Series", Marty "Fritz" Katz (1521) still leads with 2.5-.5 while Jim "Sticks" Ulaky (1521) did a drum roll on Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1571) and Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1475) debunked Kert "the Oracle" Edward (1565). In the Lower Section, in spite of the fact that he was defeated by "Dr." Phil Whittington (1365), Ilgin "the Mad Turk" Birsan (1197) shares the lead with Samuel "Reshevsky" Xin (1243) each with 3-1. Other Lower Section winners were: W. Doyle Dewbre. All results may be observed on the "Current Crosstable."  (2004 North Carolina Championship Nov 5-7) Next Smokehouse Saturday, November 20. Editor Needs Games; Please E-mail to: lelandfue@yahoo.com
Rangarajan 3-0 in Top; Lawson 3-0 in Lower Section of Smokehouse LVI
Charlotte,  NC 10-16-04:  A total of 22 chess goblins from North and South Carolina travelled to the Queen City apparently to do some early "trick or treating" at Smokehouse LVI. In the Top Section, which boasted an average rating of over 2000!, the CCC's #1 player, SM Karthik "Rajah" Rangarajan (2526) demonstrated his superiority over the canaille with wins over Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1966), Expert Keith "Chuck" Eubanks (2062) and Expert Chris "the Babe" Mabe (2110) to capture clear 1st Place with 3-0 and take home $100. Equal 2nd-3rd were Eubanks (See Game 0433) and Mabe each with 2-1 winning $25. In the Lower Section, one of the lowest rated players in the field, Josh "the Law" Lawson (1303) from parts unknown, billy-clubbed Samuel "Reshevsky" Xin (1225), Viktor "the Mad Russian" Ozherelyev (1683) and Ken "the Terrible" Ivens (1710) to take clear 1st Place with 3-0 and collect $100. Clear 2nd Place with 2.5-.5 was Slobodan "the Mad Serb" Sinanovic (1728) who pocketed $50. Honorable mention goes to 9 year old "Fuerstman School of Chess"*graduate Samuel "Reshevsky" Xin (1225) who upset Colette "Wheels" Wheeless (1552). To view complete crosstable (Click Here)(Fuerstman directed) Next Smokehouse November 20. See ya' there!
