Wendy's XLI Begins
Charlotte, NC  12-11-02:  Thirty-seven scientists and sciolists converged upon our factory of creative thinkers more commonly known as Wendy's in order to participate in Rd:1 of Wendy's XLIIn the Top Section, NM Harold "Win" Mouzon (2192) slammed closed the phone booth of Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1853) while NM Leland "El-Presidente" Fuerstman (2062) made short work of Deneil "Sean" Brazell (1759) (See Game 0279). Meanwhile, the CCC's #1 active player, NC State Champion NM Frankie "Blitz" Newton (2257) could only manage a draw versus Chris "the Babe" Mabe (1887) while Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1987) barely did likewise withSlobodan "the Mad Serb" Sinanovic (1737). In the Cruiserweight Division, Frank "Moo" Mu (1741) supplanted veteran Robert C. Moore (1700). In the Middle Section, Chris "Dirty Harry" Callahan (1452) popped some caps on the good Reverend Bernard "JoeDon" Baker (1575) (See Game 0276), Viktor "the Mad Ukrainian" Ozherelyev (1585) short circuited Nathan "TechDude" Eerenberg (1553), Jonathan Munnell (1453) upset "Iron" Mike Eberhardinger (1616) (See Game 0277), newly wed Frank {Mark} "Chessman" Johnson (1486) caused vertigo on Randy "I'm not afraid of" Hight (1487) and Paul "Survivalist" Lucas (1614) survived against Michael "Y" Shoup (1469). In the Twilight Zone Section, CCC Player Representative and Top 50 contender Alphonse "Fonzie" Ashamalla (1368) clogged the muzzles of Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1410). In the Lower Section, a win was reported by 7 year old phenom Joshua "Moo" Mu (1215) who outplayed counterpart 9 year old Kevin "Dr.Jr" Huang (1199) (See Game 0278). Other Lower Section winners were: Kevin Blackwell, Mike Richards, Chris Kohlhepp, Tony Hicks and Travis Filling. All results may be viewed in the "Current Crosstable." Newton, Eubanks Share Top Honors; Ulaky Perfect in Lower Section of Smokehouse XXXIII
Charlotte, NC 11-23-02: A rather light turnout of 16 indefatigable chessplayers participated in Wendy's XXXIII. In the Top Section, which was noticably absent of most of Charlotte's top players, (some speculated that the fear of losing was the reason), 2002 NC State Champion NM Frankie "Blitz" Newton (2257) dispatched of Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1853) and Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1987) before agreeing to a quick GM draw with SC Expert Keith Eubanks (1997). Eubanks defeated Robert C Moore (1700) and survived a losing time scramble vs. NM Leland "El-moron" Fuerstman (2062) to share =1st-2nd with a score of 2.5-.5 and take home $75. The Lower Section was dominated by James "Sticks" Ulaky (1352) who knocked off Tony Hicks (956), Frank "Mark" Johnson (1486) and Jonathan Munnell (1453) to score 3-0 and win $60. Equal 2nd with 2-1 was Jonathan Munnell winning $30. To view complete crosstable (clickHere) (Fuerstman directed) Next Smokehouse December 21. See ya' there!
