windyCCC NEWS & VIEWS  7-26-12windy
Skyland XXXVI Begins - Thanks to a Significant Increase in Participation,
1st Prize in the Top Section is Now $100!

Charlotte, NC 7-25-12: A strong turnout of 28, including 3 new members, of the most courteous calculators in the county converged upon this mental jousting arena more commonly known as the Skyland Family Restaurant in order to participate in Rd:1 of Skyland XXXV(CCC members got very comfortable sitting in the padded booths and full size tables and chairs while being catered to by our own personal waitress, Cindy. Most enjoyed a generously portioned delicious home style meal for a ridiculously low price ($6.95!), drank fresh hot coffee and other beverages, analyzed on our demo board and monitored  the giant flat screen TV with the sound turned off; open 24 hours!) In the Top Section, vacations notwithstanding, current CCC Champion, Team Asheboro's Wil "Mayhem" Mahan (2059) was taken to task by the active play of 15 year old Mark "Steeler" Biernacki (1880) (See Game 1086) who blundered a piece in the time scramble allowing the Champion to share the lead with ex-member of the NCCA Hall of Fame, the pride of Mint Hill, NM Leland "Ennui" Fuerstman (2033) who won the exchange but suffered through a complicated ending (See Game 1084) until superhero Daryl "Flash" Gordon (1909) overstepped the time limit while Expert Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (2031) went to the wire with "Judge" Slobodan Sinanovic (1822) before the Judge advanced a Pawn to the 8th rank (See Game 1085), but failed to convert it to another piece?! According to the rules, the first player may re-start his clock until he does... in the confusion, the Judge lost on time, each with 1-0. In addition, visitor from Germany, WFM Jenny Leveikina (2105) after a lively middlegame, split the point with mild mannered reporter for the Daily Planet Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1848) otherwise known as SUPERMAN! In the "B" Section, FSC Graduate Dr. Ron "Dutch" Breukelaar (1750) took full advantage of his artificial intelligence and defeated Ashboro CC guru Tom "Terrific" Hales (1789) to share the lead with Paul "Survivalist" Lucas (1739) who outplayed Harry Youchak (1381) each with 1-0. In addition, David "Copperfield" Blackwelder (1527) beat down Marnzell "Pat" Hand (1600). In the "C" Section, "Smokin" Corey Frazier (1420) won a Bishop for a couple of Pawns and went on to beat Rich "Alert" Trela (1198) to share the lead with Blackwelder with 1-0. In the Lower Section, wins were submitted by Asheboro CC member Homer Cantrell (1333), new CCC member Curtis Ianni (1301), new CCC member Mat Sadinsky (Unr) and Sam Fuerstman (1064). All welcome new member Luke Baer. In order to observe all results see "Current Crosstable" The facility was great and everybody was happy! We hope that more players will join us next Wednesday to dine, socialize and play one rated game of chess! Everyone is welcome. Long live the CCC!
Fuerstman Clear 1st in Mint Hill V
Mint Hill, NC 7-29-12:
Four loyal members of the CCC royal guard converged upon the palatial estate of NM LF in order to participate in Mint Hill V and enjoy a hardy lunch! In Rd:1, NM Leland "Ennui" Fuerstman (2015) induced a blunder on the 14th move from "Judge" Slobodan Sinanovic (1822) (See Game 1087) while Paul "Survivalist" Lucas (1739) outplayed superhero Daryl "Flash" Gordon (1909). In Rd:2, Fuerstman sacked the exchange for a piece and 2 Pawns versus the "superhero" but gave it back in the end and agreed to a Draw while the "Judge" brought down the gavel on the "Survivalist." In Rd:3, "Ennui Boy" gained a strong positional advantage against Lucas who sprang to life in the ending. With lone Queen vs. Queen and Pawn, the latter player claimed Draw, which, even though his flag had fallen, was granted! When the smoke cleared, Fuerstman finished clear 1st Place with 2-1, pocketed $40 and lost 4 rating points?! Equal 2nd-3rd were Gordon and Lucas, each with 1.5-1.5 winning $10. See Crosstable. An enjoyable time was had by all. Fuerstman directed.
